K.I.S.H. Magazine Exclusive interview featuring Dr. Adrienne Michelle Horn!

K.I.S.H. Tell us about you.

Dr. Adrienne Michelle Horn, a native resident of Miami, Florida, is an energetic community leader whose primary focus is helping new and aspiring authors write and publish manuscripts that will positively impact the literary community. Adrienne is the Founder and Executive Editor of I A.M. Editing, Ink and, most recently, Founder of the 501(c)(3) organization, The I A.M. Giving Foundation – a nonprofit organization for Black and Brown women and girls who suffer from mental illness, providing non-pharmacological methods to help them heal and live in their purpose.

With the art of writing being her first love, Adrienne believes that words are powerful and can aid in empowering and healing the soul. These beliefs have led her on a journey to entrepreneurship that has helped over 100 individuals fulfill their dream of becoming an author and publishing her own blog that addresses the conflicts new and aspiring writers face throughout the self-publishing process.

Adrienne has been featured in VoyageMIA and CanvasRebel Magazine. She has also provided self-publishing services, such as editing, formatting, and book cover design, for multiple best-selling titles since 2018.

In 2021, Adrienne created “The Writer’s Haven” Journal Line – a purist, premium stationery line that celebrates African American cultures. It was designed to promote the art of writing and organization within the African community as a non-pharmacological approach to combat mental illness.

Despite being a pharmacist, owning an editing business, and managing a nonprofit organization, Adrienne is committed to her passions and making a global impact for the greater good. Adrienne currently resides in South Florida with her beautiful daughter, Paris Alana.

K.I.S.H.- What is your dream and how will accomplishing your dream benefit you and others?

Dr. Adrienne: Entrepreneurship is a journey all by itself. Having a successful business has taught me the beauty of flexibility and given me a chance to leave behind a legacy for my daughter. I’ve had the pleasure of networking with a wide range of clients and fellow entrepreneurs, who have opened doors to new opportunities and provided valuable insight.

In addition, I want to share my editing gift with the world to help the voices of countless individuals who don’t feel like they are consistently unheard. I want to make sure that each person I come into contact with who has a burning desire to publish a book has a quality experience with me that leaves them with the confidence they need to excel.

K.I.S.H. – Who or what inspired you to pursue this dream?

Dr. Adrienne- In the fall of 2016, I had the unfortunate experience of being laid off of my job as a new mother and the sole provider of my household. I tried everything I could to find another job, but no one would hire me because I was overqualified. In the midst of despair, I decided to put my literary skills to use. From there, I A.M. Editing Ink, LLC was born.

K.I.S.H. -What challenges have you encountered while pursuing your dream?

Dr. Adrienne- When I began my business, I was responsible for about 90% of the operations of my business, which equates to being a one-woman show. I found much success as a first-time entrepreneur. However, I was burning myself out, and I had not even truly gotten started. Statistics show that 20% of small businesses fail after one year of business. I was determined to succeed. I did not want to be in that 20 percent. However, I had one issue – I was petrified of delegating.

In my personal life, I had been accustomed to doing everything on my own. And you know how the saying goes. If you want it done right, do it yourself. I believed that wholeheartedly. However, I found out rather quickly that succeeding required soliciting help. Hence, my next roadblock – finding people who were dependable and skilled in their crafts.

As I’ve grown, I have learned how to properly select team members, and I am very proud to say that each one of them has contributed to my success.

Being a full-time pharmacist, a full-time editor, and a full-time mother can be challenging at times, but working in these roles has taught me the importance of time management and how to prioritize things, such as my family and self-care.

K.I.S.H. -Who or what inspired you to keep pushing regardless of the challenges you’ve encountered?

Dr. Adrienne -My life changed in a flash, and the only reason I was able to rise to the challenge without crumbling was because of my daughter. I began my career in professional editing with Paris as my guiding inspiration. I knew I had to take care of her, and for a while, it was my sole source of income. I was determined not to let her down.

K.I.S.H. -Please provide final thoughts/advice for others by finishing this sentence… dream.

Dr. Adrienne- Have the courage to leave what is familiar and go after your dream!
