Love & Marriage: Detroit, a new series produced by reality TV producer and Detroit native Carlos King, is set to premiere on June 24 at 9 PM on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, expanding the reach of the Love & Marriage franchise into the Midwest.
Shamika Minisee, a contributing writer for K.I.S.H. Magazine was given permission to take part in a virtual press tour on June 14, 2023. During the event, she had the opportunity to interact with Carlos King, the creator of the show, as well as the stars of the series: Russell and Kolby Harris, Brandon and Kristina Bowman Smith, and Anthony and Dr. LaToya Thompson.
The city of Detroit is experiencing a resurgence, with its inhabitants also thriving. Black culture is prevalent in this city, which values family, friendship, business, excellence, and romance. Love & Marriage: Detroit will focus on a group of African American families who have strong connections to Detroit and have chosen to remain in the city to demonstrate their ability to provide their families with the best possible lives in this revitalizing community.
The Harrises: Russell and Kolby Harris, who have been married for three years and have a two-year-old daughter, are the main focus of the series. Russell is not only a devoted husband but also the founder of Soar Detroit, a non-profit organization that aims to promote literacy and sports in the community. Meanwhile, Kolby is a rising social media influencer who uses her platform to connect with her followers. However, her growing popularity creates tension with some of the more established influencers in the group. As Kolby navigates the influencer space, a rift forms between her and her friend Kristina when a collaborative opportunity arises, leaving Kristina apprehensive about joining forces. The disagreement between the two friends also affects their husbands, who are close friends, adding complexity to the story.
The Smiths: Married for 14 years and raising their two sons, Anthony and Dr. LaToya Thompson bring a unique dynamic to the cast of Love & Marriage: Detroit. Anthony is employed by Live Nation, a touring company, and is also the owner of a production studio. LaToya, a successful physical therapist specializing in sports injuries, owns Opulence Wines and deals with the challenges of being a busy mom, wife, and business owner. Anthony has started a men’s organization which serves as a platform for men to discuss the issues affecting their relationships and lives. One of his initiatives includes organizing a Man’s Movement March in Detroit, where he invites Marsau Scott from Love & Marriage: Huntsville as a guest speaker. Meanwhile, LaToya experiences difficulties as a Black woman in the predominantly white wine business. Tensions arise when Anthony implies that his contributions played a significant role in the success of her wine company, which further complicates their relationship.
